What you’ll find there…

Follow the blue weathervane markers to explore the grounds of Ambarrow Court, once part of an extensive Victorian country estate. Built in 1885 for Lieutenant Colonel Harvey and his wife Edith, and later used the by the Royal Air Force for pioneering research into radar, light emitting diodes and radar! The house was demolished in the 1970s and little remains of its former glory, other than a few fine trees and the echo of yew hedging.

Take the red acorn route to climb to the top of Ambarrow Hill and speculate on its use. Perhaps a burial mound, or a staging hill where monarchs stood to shoot deer? Sadly, popular opinion seems to be that it’s just an interesting natural feature!

Whatever its past, Ambarrow is now a lovely green nature reserve. Wildlife enthusiasts will love the woodlands and meadows, attracting a host of species such as glow worms, bats and stag beetles. Enjoy the snow drops, daffodils, bluebells, meadow flowers or autumn colours, depending on the season.

If you’re sporty and adventurous, you might like to try the permanent orienteering course! Or simply take a longer walk on one of the many connecting footpaths. The simplest link is over to Horseshoe Lake, an easy 0.6km, well signposted walk starting just across the road from the car park (note, horses grazing). Or you can link up with the 41.8km Rambler’s Route around the outskirts of Bracknell Forest or head off on the Three Castles Path, a long distance route running all the way from Windsor to Winchester!
