Where you’ll find it…

There’s a good free car park at Ottershaw Memorial Fields on Fox Hills Road, Ottershaw, nearest postcode KT16 0ES. Grid reference TQ 01729 64152. What3Words: cycle.bowls.bond.

N.B. We’ve given the nearest postcode, but recommend using the links to look up the exact location. The centre of a postcode may be up to half a mile from your destination.

What you’ll find there…

A well waymarked trail takes you around the woodlands, and to the top of Ether Hill, where there are benches from which to admire the view across Queenswood Golf Course and the surrounding countryside. The waymarking is particularly nice here, with images of local wildlife on the marker posts. If starting from the car park mentioned above, walk across the recreation field towards the woodland and pick up the “Ether Hill Loop” posts for a pleasant circular walk.

An information board and leaflets in the car park tell you all about the woodlands of Ottershaw, their history and wildlife. In days gone by, before the trees grew up, the hill would have been a striking landmark; and records suggest it was the site of public gallows! A rather gruesome reminder to anyone thinking of breaking the law! Pity the poor individuals who made their last journey to the top of Ether Hill!

If you’re looking for a longer walk, why not link up with neighbouring Timber Hill & Ottershaw Chase? If you haven’t been to these woodlands yet, you’ll find it makes a good length walk if you link all three. But take care crossing the A319, Chobham Road.

For an even longer circular route linking up with Homewood Park, Hare Hill, Timber Hill & Ottershaw Chase, take a look at our ‘Linking Ottershaw’s Greenspaces’ route. The 8km walk uses public rights of way to link up the greenspaces, but requires two busy road crossings, and a short section of road walking to link Fox Hills Road with Homewood Park. We’ve saved this and all other routes to OutdoorActive.

Note: If you’re walking dogs, you may find it useful to know that there are no ponds or streams. When we visited in September 2023, we noticed the wire fence that defines a strip of private land has become very untidy and has lots of sharp bits.
