Heathland Hounds is a Facebook group for dog walkers in the Thames Basin Heaths area of Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. We love all things dog-related and our growing community shares lots of fun and information.

Happy hounds… We want you to enjoy your walks on the heaths and if your dog is safe and happy, you can both have fun.

Healthy heaths… The heaths are a Special Protection Area, setup in 2005 to protect the rare birds that breed here. Three species in particular, nightjar, Dartford warbler and woodlark. They need this protection because they nest on the ground or in low-growing vegetation, making them extremely vulnerable. The special status protects birds, but does so much more than that. It protects the heathland for all sorts of wonderful wildlife, and gives the landscape we love a huge amount of protection from development. By following the Good dog guide we can all help secure the future of the heathland.

Heathland Hounds is the place to be for the latest news about ‘Greenspace on your doorstep’, our guide to over 70 local country walks that are perfect for dog walking. You can visit these walks safe in the knowledge that you’re not disturbing rare wildlife.

In normal times we also run regular group walks, have prize giveaways, and from time to time we even bring you training and behavioural advice. Ever wished you could have five minutes with a trained dog behaviourist to ask those nagging questions? It’s all for FREE!
