It’s nearly Heath Week!
Delve into the magic of Heath Week with the team at the Thames Basin Heaths Partnership…
With an exciting calendar of events designed for the whole family to enjoy, Heath Week brings the opportunity to discover the unique heathland habitats of the Thames Basin Heaths area of Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
Discover the magic! Monday 28th July to Sunday 3rd August 2025
All of the free events have been carefully put together to inspire our children to understand and protect the precious heathland landscapes. From treasure hunts to guided nature walks, why not join us for one of our upcoming free events! Are reptiles more your thing? Book your free place on our Butterfly and Reptile walk where you’ll learn to spot the butterfly species unique to heathlands. Or perhaps the mysterious Nightjars that chur in the night are calling your name. Almost impossible to see during the day, Nightjars can be spotted across their natural heathland habitat at night. Join us at Chobham Common in Surrey for a free Nightjar walk.
Details of all the events can be found on our Heath Week page and you can have a taster of previous years by visiting our Heath Week Gallery.
Please do join in the fun, try something new, and learn about why your local heathlands are so special.
Here’s what Communications Officer Eloise has to say ahead of her first Heath Week…
Hello!
I have been busy getting stuck in with the Thames Basin Heaths team preparing for Heath Week over the last few weeks. Everyone has been working hard to finalise preparation for the exciting events we’ve got planned for you to explore.
Ahead of my first Heath Week, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of the heathland habitats that are at the heart of the team’s important work. Heath Week is a chance to take a walk on the wild side, unearthing the secrets of the rich history of the landscape. I’ve been lucky enough to experience the mystical chur of the Nightjars on a few occasions, and still get just as excited as the first time when I hear them now. There’s something so magical about stepping into the hush of the heath at dusk, weaving your way along the paths, greeted by the low chur of the Nightjar as it swoops across its natural habitat. The sharp clack of their wings as they take flight sticks with you; the Nightjar walks are not to be missed.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the wonder of Heath Week. What will you explore first?
Eloise

Nightjars are unique and fascinating birds. The way they appear to float as they fly, their curious churring song and the way they catch insects in their gaping mouths. They’re very different from other birds 🐦
