Where you’ll find it…
No car park for this one, but find various pedestrian-only entrances off Little Heath Road, Mincing Lane and Garden Drive off Burr Hill Lane, Chobham. Each with free on-street parking possibilities. The main entrance, with bin and notice board, is from the small housing development on Garden Drive, off Burr Hill Lane, nearest postcode GU24 8BF. Grid reference SU 97620 62650. What you’ll find there…
A lovely little corner of Chobham, a gem waiting to be discovered. Most uniquely, and a delight to come across unexpectedly, is the neighbouring pet cemetery, with graves dating back to the 1930s. Many much-loved pets are resting here and it’s lovely to see it restored. The cemetery belonged to Lt Col RHN Baxter OBE and his wife Millicent, who lived on the Chertsey Road, and includes a memorial to their eight Airedales. It was used from 1932 to about 1970, and contains over 200 graves, but had been unattended for nearly 50 years until the Friends of Chobham Pet Cemetery took it over. Whichever entrance you use, you’ll pick up a waymarked walking route, signposted with yellow arrows. We have to admit though, we found these yellow markers difficult to follow, so our route (see link above) takes a different route. Either way, you’ll weave your way through meadow, heathland and woodland, passing streams and a pond. During the winter the ground can be very wet, so you may need your wellies! Look out for the small footbridge that takes you into the pet cemetery.
NOTE: A sign near the Garden Drive entrance warns of an area of deep water covered by vegetation and recommends keeping to paths. There are many ditches and a stream.
